Preserving Biodiversity
Known as the world's second largest archipelago country after Indonesia, the Philippines is considered as one of the megadiverse countries in the world and has become the top priority hotspots in global conservation. Consisting of at least 7, 107 isolated islands, the tropical location of the country, and the widespread areas of rainforest, the Philippines has resulted to be very rich in biodiversity – a home for different groups of organisms which have a very high level of endemism.
Notably known organisms are the bird species in the country. There are over 530 bird species found in the Philippines hotspot; about 185 of these are endemic (35 percent) and over 60 are threatened. BirdLife International has identified seven Endemic Bird Areas (EBAs in this hotspot: Mindoro, Luzon, Negros and Panay, Cebu, Mindanao and the Eastern Visayas, the Sulu archipelago, and Palawan. Like other taxa, birds exhibit a strong pattern of regional endemism.
That’s what inspired Animal Kingdom research team to feature Cebu due to the presence of the four threatened endemic species namely the critically endangered Cebu Flowerpecker (scientific name Dicaeum quadricolor), the endangered Black Shama (Copsychus cebuensis), the endangered Cebu Hawk-owl (Ninox rumseyi) and the Cebu Brown Dove (Phapitreron frontalis) which make the island to be an important global Endemic Bird Area and an Important Bird Area according to BirdLife International.
The Animal Kingdom team chose Black Shama, locally known as “Siloy, as the cover story because of its unique characteristic – it sings. Because of its unique sound from other birds, more people get interested to hunt this bird. Apart from that, this magazine’s issue will write about Cebu’s biodiversity, the government’s efforts in preserving the nature, and the threats it faces from population growth, rapid urbanization, hunting, bird’s nest collection, illegal bird trading, and among others.
It will also present the top 10 winners of this year’s photography contest in our endeavor to unite photography enthusiasts to give their best shots in featuring wildlife towards our goal in raising awareness regarding wildlife conservation.
